Trigun: Characters

Contributed by Cyclone Shinobi

Vash the Stampede, The Humanoid Typhoon, the 60 billion double dollar man. Whichever name you prefer, Vash is the main character of Trigun, and perhaps the most mysterious character out of the bunch. He believes in the theory of 'Love and Peace,' that no man has the right to take the life of another. Vash has the unwanted burden of destruction on his shoulders. It seems as though wherever Vash is, destruction and death are soon to follow.

The Humanoid Typhoon was genetically created as a plant-human hybrid. He was born with a twin brother, who goes by the name of Knives. As the series progresses, we find out that Knives and Vash aren't on good terms, in fact, they have conflicting views on humans. Vash feels that he, Knives, and humans are all equal, while on the other hand Knives believes that Vash and himself are of a superior race and that humans are below them.

Vash's character can range from a bouncy, cheery optimist to a determined and serious guardian who will protect anyone in the blink of an eye. His genetic enhancement allows him to perform exceptionally well with a gun, dodge bullets effortlessly, and despite his occasional lack of it, Vash is very intelligent.

The one person that Vash looks up to is Rem, his childhood mentor. Rem taught him that it is wrong to take the life of another, and molded the foundation of the 'Love and Peace' theory that Vash so strongly believes in. The story of Trigun is a journey for Vash to spread Love and Peace. Where will this journey take him, and what new enemies and comrades will Vash meet on the way?
Meryl Strife, agent for the Bernardelli Insurance Agency, is assigned to follow Vash the Stampede to help prevent damages that may be caused by the Typhoon. Meryl carries a bunch of one or two-bullet guns in her coat, and they can prove to be just as deadly as a normal gun. At first, Meryl doubts that Vash is truly the Stampede until she sees him in action. As the end of the series approaches, we see that Ms. Strife has a growing "crush" on Vash, but has too much dignity to straight-out admit it.
Millie Thompson, agent for the Bernardelli Insurance Agency and good friend/side-kick of Meryl Strife, is assigned to follow Vash the Stampede to help prevent damages caused by the Typhoon. She travels with Meryl, and is almost always cheery. Millie has a positive outlook on life, but some things can affect her to the point of streaming tears. Millie carries around a machine gun-like weapon that fires out powerful boomerangs that could even tip over an army tank! Although it's not explicitly stated, one can assume that Millie has/had a crush on Nicholas D. Wolfwood.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood is a traveling priest who wields a giant cross known as the Cross Punisher. The Cross Punisher fires missiles, can be used as a machine gun, and for easy access, stores guns in the arms of the cross-like weapon. Nicholas has had a rather traumatizing past. Not much is known about his parents, only that he had a guardian who treated him poorly. One day, Wolfwood picked up a gun and murdered his guardian, and from that day, he knew he was meant to be a gunman.

Wolfwood has a kind disposition, but will sometimes use sarcasm and fear to help people make the right decisions. When Vash found Wolfwood in the desert, they instantly became friends.
Knives is Vash's cynical twin brother. He shares conflicting views with the Stampede, saying that humans are worthless and will eventually suffer the same fate that is death. Knives is just as strong a warrior as his twin brother, and the same can be said about his intelligence. He has the same gun as Vash, except it's black.

When Vash and Knives were small, Knives murdered the entire crew on the ship that they were travelling on. From that day on, Vash saw Knives as his enemy.
Legato Bluesummers is the head of the Gung-Ho Guns, a group of outlaws working for Knives to bring destruction to the earth. The main goal of the Gun-Ho Guns is to obliterate Vash the Stampede, however, all attempts fail.

Legato posesses the awesome power of telekinesis, the ability to move objects via the mind. He also has the ability to make people do things against their will, and uses this ability often.

Spoiler: Legato is murdered by Vash the Stampede. It's not as bad as it sounds, so read the Episode 24 guide!
Rem Saverem is Vash's idol. Rem expresses the idea that all men are created equally, and that no one has the right to take the life of another. Rem is only seen in flashbacks, as she was the caretaker of Vash and Knives when they were younger. The ship that they were on was crashing, and Rem chose to save the other plant-hybrids rather than escaping in an escape pod with Vash and Knvies. Rem is certainly the most important personage in Vash's life.
Eccentric cat that has no relativity to the story, but is there for kicks. Kuroneko appears in every episode, sometimes in the weirdest of places. In episode 7, Kuroneko appears on a calendar. In episode 13, he is in a garbage can. In episode 22, he is thrown at Wolfwood by the orphans. In episode 26, Kuroneko-sama is found floating in a fountain.
