Neon Genesis Evangelion

Directly from the back of the first DVD.
The year is 2015. As the remnants of the human race cower in subterranean cities, a deadly war is being waged for what is left of the planet. On one side are the mysterious beings known only as the Angels; on the other, the secret agency NERV with mankind's last hope, the awe-inspiring Evangelions.
Piloted by a special team young warriors, these giant bio-mechanical humanoids are the only thing that can withstand the force of the Angel's defense fields long enough for the pilots to tackle the massice invaders in brutal hand-to-hand combat.
At the same time, NERV struggles to pierce the veil of mystery surrounding the enigmatic Angels. High-tech action, blistering battle sequences, soul ripping drama and spectacular visuals are seamlessly merged in the stunning animated series that ventures beyond the boundaries of space opera and questions the very nature of what it is to be human.
Mankind's last battle has begun in Neon Genesis Evangelion!
Review
This is my favorite Anime of all. It is a psychological Anime that makes you question who you are and, as in the summary, what it means to be human. I can almost guarantee that you will need to see it a second time to fully understand it.
The main character is Shinji Ikari, pilot of Unit-01. His father is Gendo Ikari, the commander of NERV. Shinji hates his father, as his father does not appreciate him. His mother, Yui Ikari is deceased. Shinji and Gendo have not seen each other for a couple of years, until the first episode. Throughout the series, Shinji rises from a person who believes his life means nothing, to knowing it actually means something.
You will find that NERV is not the main operative, but SEELE is. NERV is a branch of SEELE. SEELE plans to perfect humans by the using of the Human Instrumentality Project. This will combine all human beings into one single entity.
The heart of this series is the thinking that comes with it. This is should not be regarded as "another mecha series", as it is not. The Evangelions, Eva for short when speaking singular and Evas for when speaking plural, are bio-mechanical as stated in the summary. They have souls in them, and I shall not speak anymore of it.
It has many religious references, however, for those who are Atheist, the religious references make it even more wonderful.
It has quite a bit of fan service, however, no nudity.
I highly recommend you get the time to watch this. It has memorable characters, an amazing plot, and great battle sequences. The end might be confusing. I recommend that after you watch the series, you buy the movie, End of Evangelion which gives you an alternate ending which will explain more. And if you have the money, buy Death and Rebirth.
The DVDs are already out and I think that there are some VHS. If you have the money, buy the perfect collection, which has all the episodes.
