Gunsmith Cats
written by Hoshiakari Mikomi
A cold, hard, and fast-paced city, where you think anything is
possible. That is Chicago. Rally Vincent owns a small gunshop with a wide variety of
wares, it's own shooting range and her own private collection. Her partner is
Minnie Mae Hawkins, a little blonde that you could easily mistake for a
thirteen year old girl.
'Gunsmith Cats' tells the story of Rally and Mae's many
adventures as liscensed bounty hunters, frequently working along side with the
Chicago police. With Rally's beloved Shelby GT-500 and Mae's prettily painted
grenades and packs of C-4, service is delivered with a smile.
One of the many draws of this anime is the attention to detail. Every
gun, car and location shown is real and completely accurate. Also, the action
scenes don't seem as fake as many other animes out there. If someone gets a
mortal wound, they actually die. Music, quite like Cowboy Bebop, is a mixture of
jazz and blues.
As it falls into the car/action genre, you might say this is an anime
that would mainly draw guys (as it does have a couple lingerie scenes), but it
is perfectly capable of drawing in a female audience. I would recommend it to
a teen audience fifteen and older though, as it does have some rough
language, blood spray and violence.
There is also a 'Gunsmith Cats' manga, continuing Rally and Mae's
adventures which is released through Dark Horse Publishing. Rally was also in the
manga 'Riding Bean' as a blonde, and Riding Bean appears in the 'Gunsmith Cats'
manga.
'Gunsmith Cats' is a three-part OVA, avaliable on both VHS and the DVD titled
'Bulletproof' which also has a 'making-of' feature.
