Full Metal Alchemist: 44/50; PG-PG13
Review by Windswept
Plot: 10
Dad walks out, mom dies, attempt to get mom back scars, literally, for life...and that's just in the first couple episodes. FMA is a very deep anime, if you look into it enough. It deals with morality to a degree, and certainly excels at triggering a bunch of different emotions--all in a single episode. Everything flows nice and smooth, illustrating the events that shaped the main characters in a very cohesive way. So far there have been a lot of hidden twists, involving the Ishbal especially, and their revelation will be very interesting.
Characters: 9
Each of the charas has a past, and their current mental structure as a result of that past. Every one of them has a different outlook, and a different view. What I really loved about all the characters (favorites being Roy, Ed, Hughes and Scar) is that they all seem human. The only problem is that some of the characters that hang around alot (Roy's aides, or something) aren't gone into enough.
Music: 6
Eh, the music was weird, openings especially. I personally don't think they fit, but hey, that's me. I really liked the 2nd and 3rd endings, however.
Design: 9
Definitely well done. You're dealing with alchemy in this anime, and the various amazing things that alchemy can conjure up. There aren't (too many) over the top light flashes, and everything's pretty consistent. Detail is given to every aspect of the scenes.
Censorship: PG/PG-13
There's blood, severed limbs, and a couple creepy things I didn't want to see (Ed's 'resurrected' mom...). But it's not over the top--it's very realistic. You're bound to come across that sort of thing in alchemy, and politics, and war--and FMA depicts it without any gloss, which is what makes it good.
Opinion/Overall: 9
I love FMA, to be honest. It has the ability to make you laugh and cry in the same episode, and does it without anything overly tragic. Ed and Al's mental and emotional struggles are real, and touching--their reactions to what happens around them and to them are human.
