Still set around when Ed and Al are 11/12, the two are on their way to Central so they can meet Roy and become State Alchemists. At one of their train stops, they prevent a man from stealing someone's purse, and hear about an alchemist, Majihal, that helps people with his alchemy. They also hear that the dead have come back to life around the town he lives in, and are attacking the townspeople. However, they go anyway, and on the way encounter a band of kids lighting fireworks, something they've never seen before. The firewors are going to be for an upcoming festival, meant to honor the dead. When one of the kids starts poking at Al, Ed rebuffs him, and they get ready to fight--and Ed trips over a rock. Majihal shows up before anything escalates, however, repairing a pillar that was broken by Al when he fell, using alchemy.
Majihal takes them to his house, and recognizes that Al is actually THE armor, not IN the armor, mentioning that they must have inherited Hohenheim's abilities. Ed asks him about human transmutation, since it was something he had discussed in a letter sent to their father, but Majihal says the price is too high to try to use it. A woman comes to give Majihal some rose jam, and seems about to say more, but leaves. Later another person knocks on the door, and it turns out to be one of the kids from before, and her father. We find out Klosse's (the girl's) sister died, apparently killed by one of the dead coming back to life.
Klosse runs off, and Ed and Al chase after her. She trips and falls down a hill toward a river, but Ed uses alchemy to freeze the water, and she lands on it. A minor note: Ed's still using a transmutation circle at this point, for some reason. Klosse tells them that her sister was found dead, and at the funeral a woman showed up--Karin. However, Karin had been dead for some time, so Klosse is convinced that Karin came to life, and killed her sister. Ed is pretty skeptical about the story, and their conversation gets reduced to name-calling.
Later Ed and Al ask Majihal about Karin, and find out that she had owned a rose farm, and succeeded in making a blue rose. However, on her way to town to sell the roses her cart overturned, and she was thrown down a cliff. When Ed asks if she could be the one supposedly attacking the townspeople Majihal refutes it, saying that the dead do not come back to life, and even if they did, she would not attack anyone. Later Ed and Al are talking about it, and say that if someone may have performed a human transmutation, but the only person with the ability to would be Majihal. They also hear a strange noise coming from somewhere in the house.
Meanwhile Klosse and her friends are planning to capture Karin in the graveyard that night. Ed and Al go as well, and accidentally step in one of Klosse's traps. Karin shows up as a ghost-like figure, and Klosse is about to attack her but is stopped by Majihal, who burns the apparition. Ed notices that as it burns, there is the same sound that he heard from before. The festival starts, and Majihal is congratulated by the townspeople for getting rid of the ghost.
Back in Majihal's house, Ed is trying to find the source of the noise he had heard. The woman from before, who had brought the rose jam, finds them and does something with a candle, which makes Ed dizzy. He falls into a room, revealing a bunch of dolls that look like Karin. He then falls unconscious, and Majihal traps Al using alchemy.
Ed wakes up chained to Al, with Majihal and the woman standing over them. Majihal goes on to blither about how he loved Karin so much, he wanted to keep her with him forever. Klosse comes in, having overheard it, and Majihal knocks her out. The woman tries to stop him, but he pushes her away and takes Klosse to try and bind her soul to one of the dolls. Meanwhile Al breaks the chains, and Ed goes to the woman, finding she has a blue rose in her hair.
They go to stop Majihal, who's started the transmutation. Ed reveals that the woman has been Karin all along--she had lost her memory, regaining it after 20 years, and had come straight to Majihal but he had ignored her. Majihal can't believe it's her, holding on to his memory of the youthful, beautiful Karin. He transmutes a sword and attacks them, but Ed stops him, knocking the sword from his hand. It flies through the air and impales Majihal. He dies still denying the fact Karin was in front of him the whole time, unwilling to believe she's no longer beautiful.
Ed and Al continue on their journey, and we get to see Klosse looking like a normal girl.
