Full Metal Alchemist: Episode Guide

Episode 2: Condemned Body

Complete Episode Screenshots

A continuation of the precious episode, it starts out with Conero rambling on about Ed and Al violating the taboo of human transmutation. He transmutes his cane into a gun and fires at them, but Ed makes a wall out of the sand to stop bullets. Conero's lackies come and Ed and Al hightail it out of these, transmuting a wall into a door to escape. After they give chase, Conero says that he's finally going to resurrect Roze's boyfriend, and he does so. Apparently. There's a shadow behind the curtain, and it speaks Roze's name (which fools her completely, feh), but feathers lie around the bed.

Meanwhile Ed and Al are taking a break from running, and it's announced over the speakers that two heretics had tried to kill the high priest, describing them. All the townspeople turn out to try and find them, eventually cornering them. Ed's trying to convince them that Conero's just using alchemy, when Roze opens her mouth and says that he brought back her dead boyfriend. (I'm sorry. I hate her. No offense to Roze fans, if there happen to be any.) This, as expected, brainwashes the villagers even more. Ed attempts one last time to convince them, but then the statues from the temple start moving, which, of course, just has to be another act from god. They attack Al and hit Ed over the head, knocking him unconscious.

Ed's brought before Conero, who takes the watch that marks him as a National Alchemist. He then does the whole 'evil laugh' bit, which is rather annoying. The next day we see Al, who is quite obviously not captured, stealing the town bell. Ed's locked up in a cellar of some sort (With an iron maiden? In a church? Come on...), and Roze comes to give him food, but ignores the fact he can't reach it, as his hands are chained above him. Ed asks if what Conero did really was her boyfriend, but she just runs off.

Meanwhile, Conero's having some pretty nasty nightmares, not that anybody cares. He wakes up to see Lust sitting in his room, and she says that the Philosopher's Stone was supposed to be a secret. Roze, being her usual self, sneaks into the room where her boyfriend supposedly is, wanting to talk to him. Conero comes in behind her, and a miraculous breeze picks up, revealing that there is no boyfriend, only a gruesome chimera made from dead birds. Conero locks her in the room, and the chimera attacks her, but sadly, she is saved by Al.

Al goes to transmuting various things, with the bell he took earlier nearby, while telling Roze about equivalent trade. She says that they obviously paid a price, and asks what happened to their mom. Al ignores the question, and presses a button that turns on what he had been transmuting. Immediately we hear Ed and Conero talking, with Conero basically revealing all his dark secrets through the makeshift speaker Al made. Much of it involved making the perfect army, of people who weren't afraid of death because they thought that he could resurrect them--not that he can. After a bit more evil ranting, Ed reveals the microphone he had hidden behind him, getting out of his chains easily.

We get to see a bunch of shots of the moronic townspeople in disbelief, as they heard everything. Conero demands to know how Ed did that, and he says his brother did--the armor from the day before was just that, something he transmuted to look like Al. Conero then transmutes another gun and tries to get rid of dear Ed. Fails, of course, and Ed transmutes his automail arm into a weapon, which is pretty nifty. Conero runs away...to be confronted by all his 'loyal followers'. He tries to save face and convince them Ed was making it all up by getting rid of him with the 'power of god', which means transmuting the statues to move again.

Ed's particularly unimpressed, and transmutes an even bigger statue that Conero couldn't even move with the Philosopher's Stone. He has the statue slam a fist into the ground near Conero. Conero says he's going to keep the Stone no matter what, and tries to run away, but his arm goes all...fitzy. Ed takes a look at the Stone, which breaks. He's rather pissed off that Conero caused all that trouble over a fake stone.

Later, Ed and Al are about to leave, but no, Roze must annoy everyone again. She says that they should have left everyone oblivious, because Conero's miracles were hope to them. Ed's not impressed by her angsty whines, and tells her that she should figure out how to walk forward on her own--after all, she has legs.

Conero's end comes in the form of Gluttony, who, well, eats him. It's not shown, but we get to hear some spectacular munching noises. After, the townspeople are finding the remnants of the birds, and, lo and behold, another Conero walks up! He says that a fake must have taken his place while he was gone, and brings all the birds back to life, and they fly happily off into the sunset. The die after everyone stops watching, of course, but whatever. This new Conero is actually Envy in disguise.

There's a nice little voiceover of Al and a pretty vocal song while he says a little bit about his and Ed's past, which sets up for the next episode. I just love this anime. So smooth. Mwuah.
