Full Metal Alchemist: Episode Guide

Episode 1: One Who Challenges the Sun

Complete Episode Screenshots

During the credits it shows Edward and Alphonse, ages 11 and 10 respectively, trying to resurrect their mother. Obviously it fails, with rather gruesome results. The timeline then jumps to the present, when the two are 14 and 15, and walking around in a desert. Al is now 'in' the suit of armor. After a couple humorous incidents they head into the town of Lior. They find a fountain of red wine, much to Ed's disappointment, and one of the townspeople stops him from drinking it. Ed comments that Lior must be a wealthy city to have a fountain of wine, and soonafter all of the people are turning on or listening to a radio broadcast, which turns out to be part sermon and part lecture on serving and obeying god. The man says the one talking is Conero, the town priest. Conero is apparently the one who made the town so rich, acting as a 'servant of god', and performing miracles. All of the townspeople seems to have a sort of hero-worship thing going on with him.

Ed gets bored of the religious talk and prepares to leave, but Al knocks over the radio as he does so, breaking it. He repairs it using a trasmutation circle (alchemy), and the townspeople ask if he can perform miracles too. Al just replies that they're alchemists; the Elric brothers. The townspeople don't get it until Lust (shown simply as a cloaked woman, not introduced yet) talks about the famous Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric. They then start fawning over...Al, because of the title 'Fullmetal', they think he's Ed. Al corrects the mistake, but then they can't believe that Ed, the short one, is the older brother...and Ed starts attacking them, way overreacting about his height. It's funny, though.

At this point my DVDs went fitzy, so no screenshots of these scenes, sorry.

Roze walks up at this point, which makes Ed stop, and he and Al introduce themselves. She says she could get them a place to stay the night at the temple, and goes to ask Conero. Being the kind priest, he says yes, and compliments her on her serving god so well. Later she goes to the grave of her boyfriend while Ed and Al watch through the window, and Al says that's the reson she sought out Conero's teachings. The next day they attend one of Conero's seminar things, and deduce that he's not performing miracles, just using alchemy. The catch is that Conero's ignoring the alchemical laws, which requires you exchange something for another. Roze gets a bit pissed they don't believe in the miracles. After, Conero is seen talking to one of his followers, spouting a load of bull that condemns Edward as a dog of the military, and saying the military has their sighs on Lior. After the man leaves, Lust and Conero exchange a few words, and it's obvious they're in league.

Ed and Roze talk in the church, with Ed asking if she really believes that Conero could resurrect her boyfriend. Ed lists the elements that make up a human body, and says there is no way that Conero could truly resurrect anyone; that many scientists before have tried, and researched, and their work is more important than praying or beliefs. He goes on to say that the ingredients of a human are bought very cheaply. Roze's getting annoyed at this point, saying Ed's being blasphemous, but he merely replies that he's a scientist, and scientists don't believe in god, even if they're the closest to him. He then goes on with the Icarus story, about the man who tried to fly to the sun but ended up getting burnt by it.

Which, by the way, happens to be a bit off. Icarus' wings melted, and he fell into the ocean and drowned. Just for the random scholar out there.

At this point the head of Al's armor is tossed into the room, and his body collapses on the floor. Conero's follower from earlier comes in holding a gun and points it at Ed. Al, headless, gets up, and the man backs away--Ed picks up Al's head and throws it at the man, knocking him to the side. Roze goes into hysterics that there's nothing inside the armor, and Al says that this is what happens to people who try to venture into god's domain--that he and Ed were both punished. She runs away screaming. Very annoying brat.

Ed and Al enter a large room, where Conero and Roze are waiting--she went and got him. Ed says that there's only one way Conero could have performed the 'miracles' from earlier, and tells him to hand over the Philosopher's Stone, which happens to be a red jewel set on a ring he wears. Conero spouts more bull about being an avatar of god, and that the military is out to end the happiness and such of all the people in Lior. Ed says he doesn't care about the military, and that he needs the Stone.

Rose starts yammering again, accusing them of being heartless and such. Conero then activates the Stone, using it to turn the ground beneath Ed and Al's feet into sand, which sweeps Al off somewhere. He says that now, Ed can't make a circle because of the sand, and presses a button. This lets out a tiger-like chimera, which is a sort of hybrid animal made with alchemy (two or more animals mixed together). Ed claps his hands together, pressing them to the sand and transmuting it into a long spear. This...greatly surprises Conero. The chimera attacks Ed, but he fends it off with the spear, and Conero transmutes a bird that had been on his shoulder, making it much larger, and it goes to attack Ed too, breaking the spear. It latches onto his leg, but instead of breaking it or ripping it off, Ed is able to kick the bird away, and with a single punch sends it reeling. Again, more surprise for Conero.

The tiger chimera's recovered by this time, and attacks Ed, but he stops it with his arm, and the thing is left gnawing on it but doing no apparent damage. Ed throws it off easily, and we see Lust, and now Gluttony as well, watching from a tier. And with a nice dramatic flair, Ed rips off his now-ruined jacket, revealing his automail arm, telling Roze that this is what happens to those who try and meddle in god's domain. Conero accuses him of violating the taboo of human transmutation, and says that this, is why Ed's called the Fullmetal Alchemist.
